This paper is an attempt to address subtitling and dubbing in the audio-visual translation of English-speaking movies, first from the perspective of the functional approach and related translation methods put forward by Peter Newmark. The language function can generally be classified into expressive (sub)function, informative function, communicative function and aesthetic function, but many special language phenomena often appear in the movies, including regional differences, temporal differences, special sets of language use, and innovated use of language, which have to be dealt with by different translating methods. The adoption of them is governed by the theory of rewriting, ideology and poetics.
