This paper explores the similarities and differences of translation strategies between subtitling and dubbing, the two major forms of screen translation.Since subtitling and dubbing are both screen translation, they are bound to have similarities as film languages and in terms of theoretical basis of translation. These similarities are important factors translators have to consider when choosing strategies. However, the differences in terms of form, purpose and target audience of the two also require different translation strategies, such as strategies concerning synchronization and mood expression. Translators have to be aware of these differences in the first place and find appropriate strategies to solve various problems and meet various requirements. By studying the language of specific movies, this paper points out the similarities and differences between subtitling and dubbing translation and comes up with proper strategies in the hope of providing guidance for film translators.
