Max Ophuls was a German Jew French director who was always in exile.He occupied an important position in the history of cinema.His work "Madame de..."and "Laura Montes" was in the 75 films which most represented of the 100 years of French cinema's artistic achievements.Ophuls derected 26 films in his life from Germany to France,then to Hollywood and back to France,also involving Austria,Netherlands,Russia and Switzerland.His creations both across geographic and the stage of film history.In addition,he was also a author of cross-cutting,he is an excellent early theater actors and directors,theater experience also brought a profound impact to his creations.Complex long shot,the German Expressionist style lighting,tragic of women in love are the key elements which make Ophuls became an author of film,this elements also have some inextricably personal relationship with his life.Because the Jewish identity and World War ?,Ophuls was exiled around,absorbed different culture and style into his own images.This article is divided into three chapters of Ophuls' life,film themes,audio-visual techniques and discusses them.The first chapter discusses Ophuls'theatrical career as a director,and his film career as a director,and his exile experience because of World War ? and Jewish identity;The second chapter discusses Ophuls' film theme which can be summarize as " Self-Reflexive";the third chapter discusses Ophuls' audio-visual style.This paper attempts to fill the blank in research of Max Ophuls,with Ophuls as a starting point,research European directors who migrated to Hollywood,and the affect of this phenomenon to the film history.
