Study On The Translation Of A Music Textbook

This thesis is a report on the practice of translation.The original text is a guitar textbook titled La Guitare C'est Pas Sorcier.The first three chapters of this textbook are analyzed in this paper according to the skopos theory so that its translation can serve as a reference for the future music textbooks.This report is divided into four chapters:a description of the mission,a description of the process,an analysis of the translation through examples,and a conclusion on the practice of translation.In the first chapter the author briefly introduces the context of this textbook and then analyzes the situation of the textbooks in China and abroad as well as the causes generated by this situation.In view of the type of the text of the music textbooks,the author chooses the skopos theory as a translation theory and explains the concept of this theory,taking into account the client's requests in order to polish the strategy in her translation work.In the second chapter,the author explains the preparatory phase before the translation of the textbook,including the search for other textbooks related to music,reminds of the knowledge in music and sets up internet tools.During the translation process,the author explains the problems encountered in the layout and interpretation of the original text.In the end,the author describes her work of revision of the translation obtained.The third chapter is the most important part of this report.According to the words,the sentences and the text,the author sorts out the difficulties appearing during the translation.This chapter is composed of five parts:the translation of the music terms,the translation of the names of people and the titles of the songs,the translation of the subtitles,the translation of the explanatory sentences and finally the cohesion and the coherence in translated text.The author explains the methods of translation used such as free translation,transliteration,amplification and omission as translation methods by analyzing the concrete examples.In these five parts,the part dealing with the translation of music terms is the most important part of this chapter.The author explores this part from three angles:the characteristics of the composition of the guitar terms,the standards of translation of the terms used in music and the methods of translation of these terms,by analyzing the problems of their translation and bringing the solutions.In the part related to the translation of the names of people and the titles of songs,the author sorts the names of people according to the standards of translation of these names and explains the concrete methods used for each kind of names.For the translation of the titles of songs,the author translates them according to the same principle.In the part of the translation of the subtitles,the author translates them by using the amplification so that the translated subtitles are well-worked and aesthetic in style and form.In the part of the translation of the explanatory sentences,the author translated these sentences of the textbook by using the omission to make them simpler and clearer to facilitate the readers' understanding.In the end,the author controls the cohesion and coherence of the translated text by testing the cohesion at the level of the form and the coherence at the level of the semantics as well as the logic between the translated texts.In the last chapter,the author concludes on this practice of translation by raising problems arising from the translation,essentially the problems concerning the translation of the names of people and the titles of the songs and the translation of music terms.As for the errors that appear in the original text,the author sorts them and explains how to resolve them in order to realize the feedback of the translated text on the original text.Finally,the author talks about what she learned during the translation and gives her point of view on the translation of the music textbooks so that the translation she has made can become a reference for the translation of future music textbooks.
