Booming biological science and technology in 21 st century boosts the development of food production, medical care, and many engineering domains, leading to enormous efforts in the cultivation of biological talents in both basic and applied research. It has created a great demand of translated biological textbooks. Through reading translated textbooks, students gain a comprehensive picture about Biology, and acquire accurate and professional knowledge. And the latest progress of this discipline are also presented and introduced in these textbooks.The report is based on translation practice of Cell and Molecular Biology(Concepts and Experiments), 7th edition by Gerald Karp. From the original book, seventeen sections of Human Perspective are collected, the length of which is over 100,000 in total, forming a collection: Cell and Molecular Biology under Human Perspective.Biological textbooks present features of English for Science and Technology(EST) concerning Biology, as well as that of textbook. According to Vermeer, the purpose of translation determines the strategies, which, in this project, means that translation should fulfill the goal of EST text, accurate and concise delivery of knowledge, and that of textbooks, readable and accurate instruction. According to aims of the source text, translation strategies have been analyzed from three dimensions: terminology, sentence and text of figure illustration in this paper. The author proposes solutions for figuring out the precise meanings of three types of terminology difficult to translate. The author also offers strategies to deal with definition sentences, nominalized structures and passive sentences, which are conducive to reproduce the underlying logic of sentences and present meanings with reader-acceptable expressions. Meanwhile, methodologies to translate description and process in figure illustration are presented in the paper. By analysis, it is discovered that the notion of Skopos Theory that translation should be based on the target of the text is an effective approach to direct translation of pragmatic texts like textbooks in biology.
