Lexical Stylistic Features Of English Political News In China Daily-based On Corpus

China Daily is currently the only national English-language daily newspaper,which is the window of China's foreign exchange.The content of the political reporting column is dominated by major domestic current affairs which are close to the national conditions of China.As a special English variant,China Daily political news reports use fluent and authentic language which has made its lexical features more distinctive.Thus,it is of great significance for us to study the lexical stylistic features in China Daily English political news.In this study,all news reports from 2013 to 2015 are downloaded from the Government & Politics column of the China Daily website,which are corpus for the establishment of China Daily Political News Corpus(CDPNC),with a total of 6,816 news stories and 2.6 million tokens.In this thesis,the author adopts quantitative and qualitative research methods,on the basis of a self-built China Daily Political News Corpus,to take COCA as a reference corpus,and study the vocabulary size,lexical density,word frequency and word class under the framework of lexicology.The results shows that,compared with COCA,the vocabulary size of CDPNC is smaller,which indicates that its vocabulary is not as diverse as COCA.In terms of lexical density,the density of vocabulary in CDPNC is smaller than that of COCA.Since COCA is a general English corpus,its corpus covers all kinds of information,thus its vocabulary are richer and more diverse.By contrasting the first 50 high frequency words of the two corpora,the author finds that the two high frequency overlapping words in the two corpora are function words.There are more content words in CDPNC,especially proper nouns and abbreviated words that reflect Chinese political and social characteristics.As to the word class,the use of vocabulary in CDPNC is mostly nouns,while adjectives are used much more than verbs because the writing of political news requires more nouns to convey more information.In addition,this thesis from the perspective of stylistics,studies on the vocabulary of China Daily political news from the four aspects: nouns,verbs,midget words,neologisms and finds the following characteristics: 1.Extensive use of proper nouns,abbreviated words and multi-noun modifiers,may save the news layout at the same time to convey a lot of information to the reader.2.The frequency of Said is the highest of all verbs used in China Daily political news,and the verbs' voice in the news headline tends to be active voice.3.A lot of midget words are used in news headlines and texts.4.Neologisms emerge in an endless stream,and most of them are generated by compounding.In addition,the use of Chinese Pinyin as the loan word is a major feature of China Daily political news writing.This research enriches the studies of stylistic features of the vocabulary in China Daily English political news.The findings may help English learners understand words features in English political news which can make the readers do more efficient readings of English political news and quickly criticize the political advantages and disadvantages.In addition,this study can provide specific research strategies and guidance for foreign translators in the research methods,providing reference for how to standardize the use of words in foreign propaganda materials,and providing fresh examples for the training of English teaching and English translation talents.
