A Study Of Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory Of Translation

Accepted as influential interpreting theory in the international community,the Interpretive Theory of Translation plays a decisive role in China's interpreting studies and interpreting practice.With the frequent exchanges among the international communities,interpreting has become an important part in the communication among different countries.Guided by the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the thesis attempts to analyze the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting of the Press Conference on China's Annual Report to Climate Change in 2013 held by the News Office of the State Council with the intention of presenting the interpreter's application of the theory,its enlightenment and guidance on the interpreting studies and interpreting practice in the future.Based on the Interpretive Theory of Translation,the present study attempts to analyze typical examples in this press conference.Detailed case studies are focused on the three stages of the triangular model of the Interpretive Theory of Translation,sense comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation.The first stage discusses the importance of comprehension from linguistic understanding and cognitive complement;the second stage,deverbalization,is elaborated how to realize deverbalization and the necessity of deverbalization at the lexical and syntactic levels;reformulation is illustrated from the perspective of language coherence in the target language and explicitation of textual meaning to highlight the significance of reformulation in the triangular model of interpreting.It is found that,in interpreting,it is necessary for the interpreter to possess abundant encyclopedic knowledge,solid bilingual competence and strong cognitive capacity.It can ensure accurate comprehension,faithful expression of sense and successful accomplishments of the interpreting task.Realizing the deverbalization of sense makes the target language conform to the target audience without being restricted by the linguistic form of the source language.Language coherence in the target language and explicitation of textual meaning enable the target language to be natural and consistent with its linguistic convention.Only with the realization of accurate comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation(coherent language),can the interpreter succeed in the interpreting task.
