Press conference for foreign affairs,as an important part of international diplomacy, covers a wind range of political topics, implying in-depth discussion.Today, the tide of globalization has made joint press conference a highlight for international diplomacy, and this two-way press conference is of greater vision and political significance from both the perspectives of width and depth. However, this also means that interpreters will face multiplied challenges in interpreting for this kind of joint press conference, not only from extensive and in-depth discussion but also from different culture context. This paper discusses the value of interpretive theory in E-C conference interpreting through a case study of the interpreting of the joint press conference by Barack Obama and David Cameron in 2016.Based on the Triangle Model,it elaborates on “understanding” and “deverbalization”,the first two steps in this triangular process.Through this case study,it summarizes five typical types of difficulties in E-C conference interpreting, including the multitude of abstract expressions, background information intensity, sentence length and complexity, semantic and logical complexity, and emotional subtlety. Finally,it provides five corresponding strategies to solve those problems in hopes of offering some insight into conference interpreting, the strategies being visualization, background information addition and reduction, sentence segmentation and reorganization, integration of sense and logic and “emotional transplant”.
