A Report On Simulated C-E SI Of The Press Conference On The Annual Report Of China’s Polices And Actions For Addressing Climate Change In 2018

The report is based on the simulated SI practice of the press conference on The Annual Report of China’s Polices and Actions for Addressing Climate Change in 2018 presented by the State Council Information Office(SCIO)in November 2018.During this simulated simultaneous interpretation of the press conference,two spokespersons first introduced the audience the latest progress and major achievements of China’s response to global climate changes,and then spared some time for answering the questions raised by reporters present.Due to the intrinsic nature of such a diplomatic occasion,a great deal of colloquial fuzziness was produced,which thus put a burden of understanding and analysis on the interpreter,thus affecting the interpretation quality.Through simulated SI,the author of this report classifies different cases of it into three aspects: 1)fuzzy words;2)fuzzy rhetoric;3)linguistic hedges.In view of the above difficulties,after trials and errors,the author of this report adopts some corresponding coping tactics based on Skopos Theory.Skopos Theory advocates that“The end justifies the means”,so the choice of interpreting tactics relies on the objectives of the original language and the realization of certain effects.The major aims of the press conference are to demonstrate China’s achievements in addressing climate changes and promote country image.On that basis,the author of this report puts forward six corresponding interpreting tactics,that is: 1)Implicitation and conversion;2)integration and clarification;3)retention and reversion.The categories of the difficulties caused by the linguistic fuzziness in this report and the coping tactics may provide helpful guidance and reference for the author of this report and other interpreters to deal with similar linguistic fuzziness in SI.
