Consecutive Interpreting Strategies In Press Conference From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

With the deepening of reform and opening up and globalization, interpreting, as the bridge of cross-cultural communication, plays an increasingly important role in China’s economic, political, and social activities. Especially in recent years, more and more people get to know the interpreter as a profession through live TV and broadcast of the government press conference from the news media. However, excellent interpreters, especially simultaneous interpreters are still in short supply. Due importance has been attached to the professional training of interpreting in order to fill the current talent gap. Interpretation as a new challenging job not only has attracted lot of students in college and university, but also has caught the eye of domestic and foreign scholars by its unique way of working.Due to the difficulty in keeping record, the research on interpretation theory started much later than translation, the theoretical framework of which is still far from perfect. Among all the interpreting theory, Interpretive Theory intrigues the author the most, which has relatively mature system and has exerted great impact on the development of domestic interpreting research. Interpretive Theory proposed an important notion—the triangular model, which introduces the stage of de-verbalization in between the widely recognized two stages of comprehension and reformulation. The theory also points out that the object of interpreting should be the sense of source discourse and interpreting should be conducted around the unit of sense, which is of great significance in guiding interpreter’s practice.This thesis aims to anticipate the difficulties that may occur in interpreting practice and analyze the coping strategies to overcome the difficulties on the basis of theoretical framework of Interpretive Theory. And also by studying the characteristics of press conference interpreting, and actual application of CI strategies in conference interpreting, the author attempt to prove the significance of Interpretive Theory in guiding the actual practice.
