The most characteristic thought expressed in Mu Xin's works of literature and art is his individualism, which assimilated personality and creation from western individualism and further expended its meaning. It is not related to egoism or altruism but to self-esteem and self-improvement,and it generally includes three aspects: self-discovering,self-improving and self-sublimating.Mu Xin's individualism thought has obvious transcendency, which embodies constant self-transcendence and self-sublimation while pursuing self-improving.Thus his individulism talks not only about individual but also transcend individual, and not only about pessimism but also transcend pessimism. So essentially, what Mu Xin's individualism demonstrates is his deep love to all human beings. The constant transcendency in Mu Xin's individualism makes it have one paradoxical contradiction. When Mu Xin has described one end for certain this moment,he would reverse and transcend it at that time, even move to the totally opposite direnction. This seemingly contradictory form of idea-expression derives from Mu Xin's Dialogique. As one mode of thinking,Dialogique had profound background of intellectual history, although this conception was proposed by Edgar Morin. Its background can be traced back to the dialectical thoughts of Socratism in the West, and to Laocius and the earlier thoughts about Zhong-dao(the middle path)and Zhong-guan(viewing from the middle)in Buddhism in the East. And Mu Xin's Dialogique in his individualism was mainly influenced by Laocius' dialectical thinking mode.In addition to the effects on ideology,Mu Xin's individualism thought also reflects on his works of literature and paintings. In his proses Seven Grammes, the Reflection in Columbia and ink painting Life and Death,Mu Xin's individualism demonstrates in three aspects: understanding the true self, emancipating the inner self, and cultivating the whole self.
