A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of George Marshall:a Biography (Chapter Ⅲ)

This is a working report on the English-Chinese translation of the excerpt from George Marshall:A Biography,written and edited by Debi Unger,Irwin Unger and Stanley P.Hirshson,and published in December,2015.The translated part is the third chapter entitled Between the Wars,which mainly narrates the events during a turbulent period,including the far-reaching World War I and World War II.As a biography,this book is endowed with features of literature particularly on the aspects of language style and narrative style.On the other hand,the protagonist’s role of soldier and later significant political figure results in the existence of substantial military terms,historic events as well as names of people,places and institutions,which is also the priority and intractable point for the translation project.The report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One is an overview of the project,covering a brief introduction to the book along with the authors,and the reasons why this book has been chosen.Chapter Two demonstrates the ST’s macro features as well as micro ones on syntactic and lexical levels,and puts forward potential problems based on these analyses.Chapter Three is the whole translation process from preparations to translating,and finally to the step of quality assurance,during which the encountered obstacles,solutions and adopted tools are elaborated,assisted by proper figures.While in Chapter Four,representative cases of addresses,terms,pronouns,long sentences and other characteristic expressions along with corresponding analyses are presented from the perspectives of culture,acceptability and translation techniques.And the last part—Chapter Five summarizes the Author’s experience in completing the project,expecting to provide valuable suggestions for other peers who intend to translate biography.
