A Report On Translation Of Biographical Text

Nowadays,cultural development has increasingly become the goal for countries to enhance their comprehensive national strength and international status.Literary works,an important carrier of national cultural spirit,naturally become the focus of culture introduction.Biographies,due to their own historical and cultural background and unique creative requirements,are also the main media of cultural communication.This translation report is based on the author's translation of The Queen Mother(excerpt),a biography written by William Shawcross,a famous English journalist and biographer.The purpose of this paper is to understand the language use and writing characteristics of foreign biographical works through translating this text,and to provide some references for translation studies of the text types related.The content of this paper is divided into five parts.First,the introduction briefly presents the background of translation tasks,which involves the purpose and value of translation and provides direction for translation.The second part is the translation task description,including the analysis of the content and language characteristics of the source text.The third part describes translation process,which contains pre-translation preparation,translation stage and revision.The fourth case analysis,the main part of the thesis,discusses the concrete and difficult cases encountered in the process of translation,and analyzes the translation methods and techniques that can be adopted.In view of the differences between Chinese and English,the author mainly adopts Chinese four-character words,transliteration and conversion used to deal with words;methods of splitting,merging,reconstructing and reversed translation used in translating long difficult sentences.Then,aiming at the errors and difficulties in the translation,a conclusion is drawn in the last part.The author summarizes the process of translation and some knowledge and experience about translation of biographical literature text.In the meantime,the author also realizes that it's quite principal to fully grasp the style and language characteristics of the original text and enrich oneself so accurate conveyance of original meaning can be achieved.
