| Lisa See is one of the outstanding contemporary Chinese American female writers,.This thesis attempts to study her novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan from gender and culture perspectives through a careful reading of the Nvshu,Laotong and other relevant cultures.This thesis can be divided into three parts : introduction,main body and conclusion.The introduction part mainly involves three aspects: introduction of Lisa See and the novel,literature review,and the introduction of the main theory.The aim is to help readers have a general understanding of the novel,the writer and the basic theory.The main body includes three parts.Chapter one focuses on the Nvshu culture and female power of discourse.Firstly,it discusses female consciousness and this unique cultural phenomenon from culture perspective,in light of Nvshu.laotong.changgetang and so on,to delve into its various aspects reflecting the female consciousness and Chinese cultural connotation.Secondly,it analyzes the female power of discourse as well as the advantage of the author’s female identity.Moreover,this chapter mentions body resistance,and it reveals female consciousness of resistance implied in Nvshu the culture.Chapter two takes the relationship of Laotong as the main subject,in the framework of Gender Theory,analyzes the heroine Lily and Snow flower’s role-play in the relationship of Laotong,compares with Laotong and several gender concepts,such as sisterhood,homosexuality,heterosexuality and so on,praises friendly feeling of Laotong.Chapter three discusses the coexistence of Heterogeneity and Identity in Lisa See’ writing from a cross-cultural perspective.After comparing the differences between the novel and the reality while writing the Nvshu culture,and analyzing Lisa See’s multicultural writing mode to illustrate that the coexistence of heterogeneity and identity in this novel.This chapter suggests that Lisa See has positively incorporated the conflicts of two different cultures to accomplish the combination process with her cross-cultural writing.The last part is the conclusion of the thesis.Lisa See’s novel expresses her concern about female consciousness,gender discourse,and culture identity through writing about Nvshu and other cultures.At the same time,it points out that the novel shows a new cultural writing mode with the combination of heterogeneity and identity.Thus we can argue this novel inspires people to rethink the ancient culture and gender issues after recognizing its strong feminist tone. |
