Spatial-Time Association Of Response Codes

There are many studies showing that the representation of perception is spatially,such as the emotion,the moral and the temporal and so on,the researchers named it as stimulus–response compatibility effect(SRC effect).The SRC in the temporal is spatial-temporal association of response codes effects(STARC),for example,when the past words on the both sides of the center,the left key with the past is more quickly than right key,the future with the right key is more quickly than left.Now the explanation for SRC has two theories that are metaphor theory and polarity correspondence theory.The conceptal metaphor theory suggests that the abstract conceptal need the help of the concrete conceptal to understand,the relation of the two conceptal is mapping,therefore,the conceptal metaphor theory considers that the congruent conditions(e.g.,past words DOWN and future words UP)are categorized faster than incongruent conditions(e.g.,past words UP and future words DOWN).Recent studies on polarity differences implied an alternative explanation for the SRC,polarity correspondence theory considered that both abstract conception and concrete concept are dimensions that have two different endpoint,+ polarity and –polarity,compared to the – polarity,the polarity have process advantage,when the polarity overlap.The most important is the response advantage is denpendent on the total advantage of all the process advantage.The polarity correspondence explanation of the STARC is that spatial and temporal can use dimension to understand,the all advantage of + polarity is the STARC.The research of the polarity correspondence often use the binary classification task that is the stimulus represents on the both side of horizontal or vertial and manipulate the left key and right key to make a distinguishment.The STARC is the same paradigm,but is often to test the mapping relation between time and key response,there is less study on stimulus—spatial location,with the limited results,we found that it has the same trend with polarity correspondce.According to it,our experiments still use the same paradigm to test the relation between temporal word and position.The experiments participants are Chinese speaking and all of them are undergraduate students,the task is to distinguish the time words,with the record of response time.The experiment 1 design as a 2(time word: future,past)× 2(location: LEFT,RIGHT)repeated measures design,is aimed to test whether the speed of identification of the words of temporal is affected by the spatial location of the words on screen.The experiment shows that the most quickly is the future words on the right,then the future words on the left,the slower is the past words,no matter it on the right or left,the responds is no significant difference.The results is same with polarity correspondence and different from the conceptal metaphor.The experiment 2 design as a 2(time word: future,past)× 2(location: LEFT,RIGHT)repeated measures design,to the further test of the temporal?position.In the experiment 1,the possibility remained that some mapping existed between the time dimension of the horizontal axes(e.g.,leftward responses might be more linked with either leftward locations or future words).To addresst this issue and remove any possible mappings between the direction of movement involved in the buttonpress and either the spatial location or the stimulus polarity,we adopted a go/no-go paradigm,in which participants only responded to relevant trials by pressing a single key.The design of the experiment is also controlled the “response code”stage.The results indicated that the future on the right is more quickly than the left,the responds of the future words on the left had no difference with past words,which on the right or left is no significant difference.The results is same with polarity correspondence and different from the conceptal metaphor.At the same time,it proved the “response code” stage of the polarity correspondence theory.The experiment 3 design as a 2(time word: future,past)× 2(location:UP,DOWN)repeated measures design,to test the polarity correspondence between the temporal and vertial positon.The results still support the polarity correspondence,that is under the negative condition of the stimulus(past words),there is no difference between the congruenty condition(past words on the DOWN)with the incongruenty condition(past words on the UP).The conclusion of the three experiments can be summarized as follows:1.The relation of time words and spatial position have four stages of the process of the perception,that can be explained by the polarity correspondence.The difference between conceptal metaphor and polarity correspondence is that under the negative condition,whether the congruenty condition have significant difference to incongruenty condition,the polarity considers there is no difference;2.The polarity correspondence can make a particular explaination for stimulu?spatial position;3.The polarity of the dimension is flexible and manipulative,with the change of the polarity it will come about the different respons advantage,then the polarity can predict it easily.
