The culture exchange between China and the countries around the globe is increasingly enhanced as China goes international, during which interpretation services play a significant part in breaking language barriers to connect China with the world.A lecture, namely “Central and Eastern European Cinema” was given by a Bulgarian Canadian visiting scholar,Christina Stojanova, from University of Regina in Canada for academic exchange with School of Arts at Jilin University in July,2016.The author of the report worked as an E-C consecutive interpreter at the lecture. This report is based on the transcript of the recording in which the author finds some problems worth reflecting.Through analysis of the whole interpreting process and assessment of the interpretation quality, problems and deficiencies are categorized and discussed.Feasible solutions to the problems are put forward due to all possible causes embedded so as to provide guidance for interpreting learning and practice.Problems and difficulties emerge in the transcription of interpreting recording, resulting from various causes. For example, interpreting with no speech text from the speaker, her non-native English accent leads to listening and understanding obstacles for the inexperienced interpreter. The report applies criteria for interpretation proposed by Bao Gang in analyzing interpreting performance. The report introduces the background information of the interpreting task, the speaker and the lecture;it reviews the preparation before carrying out the task, including contacting with the speaker for the information about the speech and predicting the content of the lecture;the problems in the interpreting performance from four aspects(diction, syntactic patterns, information delivery and logic expression)and the causes are discussed, including English listening deficiency, lack of background information and glossary, weak short-term memory and insufficient notes, and poor Chinese expressing. The report proposes all possible solutions to the problems so as to improve interpreting performance: long-term preparation before taking any interpreting task, tips needed in field interpreting, obtaining feedback andmaking retrospective comment afterwards. The author realizes that maintaining high quality interpretation requires both bilingual competence and background information, completed with solid interpreting training and practice.
