Translation aesthetics studies the beauty of language art,and to be more specific,it studies the aesthetic values of translation theories and practice.Translation is not only a process of language transference, but also a process of appreciation and creation. Thus, aesthetic translation can dig into the texts to gain more aesthetic information by the application of aesthetic translation theories.Howard Goldblatt is the first foreigner who introduces Xiao Hong to the West in the 1970s.His translation of Hu Lan He Zhuan witnesses the beginning of his translation of Xiao Hong's literary works,so the study of Goldblatt's English translation of repetition in The Field of Life and Death&Tales of Hulan River, from a translational aesthetic perspective has great literary value and practical significance. In the field of English rhetoric,Wang Yulong is one of the most representatives. He has defined repetition as a positive rhetorical device, which is employed with the users' certain intention to stress a statement or to express a strong emotion. He has also divided repetition into immediate repetition(????)and intermittent(????).Li Xinhua regards repetition as a figure of speech, and divides repetition mainly into repetition in writing(????)and repetition in dialogue(????).This thesis studies repetition from a translational aesthetic perspective, which will be a great try in appreciating the language beauty of source text(ST)and target text(TT).To be more specific, this thesis analyzes repetition on lexical, syntactic and textual levels in the original Chinese text as well as its English translation. Therefore, the aims of this study,on the one hand, are to dig into the beauty of Chinese language by means of analyzing translating repetition in ST,and on the other hand,to demonstrate Howard Goldblatt's accomplishment in translating repetition in his The Field of Life and Death&Tales of Hulan River, and tries to make an objective comment on it.This paper mainly studies the transmission and loss of repetition in Howard Goldblatt's English version of Hu Lan He Zhuan and Sheng Si Chang. The present study adopts an extended view of repetition, which includes lexical repetition, syntactic repetition and textual repetition. In the analyses, the author regards repetition as a linguistic phenomenon. After collecting and summarizing the previous studies of repetition, the author proposes a more inclusive definition and classification of repetition.Under the tenets from translation aesthetics, this study carries out a comprehensive survey of language repetition by means of concrete exemplification and statistical analyses, and attempts to analyze the merits and demerits of Howard Goldblatt's translation of repetition on the levels of vocabulary, sentence and text. The findings of this thesis are as follows:firstly, the author finds that Howard Goldblatt has a great awareness of how Xiao Hong's repetitive writing techniques are practiced in ST,and the literary effects they bring out. With equal attention,he tries to reproduce this kind of aesthetic power while showing the beauty of Chinese language,at the level of vocabulary, syntax and text.Secondly, under the guidance of aesthetic values and criteria for translation(AVCT),the study finds there are more cases of successful transmission than loss when Howard Goldblatt was dealing with repetition in Hu Lan He Zhuan and Sheng Si Chang.Howard Goldblatt sticks-to grammaticality and logical thinking, yet more attention should be paid to the organization of sentences. Finally,Howard Goldblatt achieves clarity in sentence arrangement and realizes the coherence between sentences and paragraphs, and keeps the coherence in the whole text. However,it seems that Howard Goldblatt should pay more attention to lexical clarity and work harder on it.
