In the 18th century, feminism emerged in the western society. And the following century witnessed the influence on feminism by ideas such as deconstruction and post-colonialism.As a result, feminism started to permeate the field of translation theories.Feminist translation theories emphasize an overthrow of the hierarchical concept that translators are inferior to authors. In the translation process, translators should try to eliminate or intentionally highlight sexist language,so as to underline the existence and status of women.Luise Von Flotow proposed three feminist translation strategies—prefacing and footnoting, supplementing and hijacking.Fried Green Tomatoes is one of American Writer Fannie Flagg's representative works. This novel tells the stories of two generations that live in the southern areas of the United States with four women as its main characters. Two women from the 1920-30s broke social traditions and established a business and a family together,in the 1980s,one women was enlightened by another and finally found the meaning of her own life.Obvious enough,Fried Green Tomatoes is a feminist novel.More and more studies focus on analyzing modem novels from the perspective of feminism and feminist translation strategies. This thesis's goal is to explore, based on the modern feminist novel Fried Green Tomatoes, whether the western feminist translation strategies will change under the Chinese context, and if so,what changes will happen. This thesis gives an overall introduction to the background, motive and the original text, translation, author and translator of the novel in the first place. Then an elaboration is given to the development, representative scholars, and the three strategies of feminist translation theories.Based on former studies, this thesis next carries out a discussion on feminist translation under the Chinese context, trying to identify the uniqueness of such a combination.Thereafter the Chinese translation of the novel Fried Green Tomatoes is analyzed from two perspectives:which parts of the translation use the three feminist translation strategies and what effect was achieved?Did the translator try to shape feminism awareness,to be specific, did the translation stressed on women's mentality and ideas and build women's image and status? The conclusion is that when translating popular feminist literature under the Chinese context, the translator's translation philosophy is rather "modest"and has Chinese characteristics. The translator focuses more on the expressive functions rather than the political purposes of the feminist translation strategies. She(he)also tries to shape feminist awareness from the details of the language itself.
