Since1960s, discourse analysis has gained flourishing development in thelinguistic field, and cohesion theory has also played an important role in discourseanalysis. However, the application of cohesion theory is, in most cases, confined totranslation, its research into interpreting being clearly insufficient. In this thesis, theauthor uses Halliday and Hasan’s theory as the theoretical framework, and the pressconferences during the18thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China in2012as the research texts. After transcription and analysis, the author tries to dig intothe cohesive devices used in the output of Chinese-English (C-E) political consecutiveinterpreting. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, the author aims atanswering the following questions:1. What are the main cohesive devices employed in the output of C-E politicalconsecutive interpreting?2. What roles does each of the devices play?3. What are the frequencies of their usage respectively?4. What suggestions can we make to guide our interpreting practice?Qualitative analysis mainly discusses the cohesive ties used in C-E politicalconsecutive interpreting and their roles. According to Halliday and Hasan, cohesiveties are divided into reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. It is proved in this thesis that all of the five types are employed in the pressconference interpreting, and each of them plays an important role.Quantitative analysis aims at analyzing and comparing frequencies of differentcohesive ties. The author discovers that the usage of reference is much higher than theothers, while substitution and ellipsis rarely occur. Analysis proves that the differenceis determined by the characteristics of political interpreting. This suggests that weshould take it into full consideration and better apply cohesion theory into theresearch, practice and teaching of interpreting.
