Consecutive Interpreting Report Of Preventive Medical Consultation

This report is based on the interpreter's consecutive interpreting experience of preventive medical consultation at TE-PEMIC Health Industry Group.Three parties—one foreign doctor,one Chinese doctor,one Chinese client usually participate in the consultation.The interpreter is required to do consecutive work between the source language and target language to transfer the information about clients health condition,body examination results and life style to the foreign doctor as well as TE-PEMIC body examination contents and the importance of prevention told by foreign doctors to the client as accurate as possible.This thesis is composed of six chapters.Chapter ? is an introduction to the interpreting task of preventive medical consultation which includes background information,requirements and the interpreter's plan about this task.Chapter ? depicts the preparation work done before interpreting,includes parallel text reading and material collection,terminology preparation,expected difficulties etc.Chapter ? is a detailed analysis of the interpreting process and problems encountered.Chapter ?is the case study of interpreting skills employed under the guidance of Interpretative Theory,and coping tactics on the site.Chapter ? is evaluation of this task that includes self-evaluation,evaluation from clients and colleagues.The last chapter is a conclusion about the whole interpreting process and what qualities preventive interpreters should haveAfter analyzing the recording of interpreting in ten consultation meetings,grammar mistakes,missing interpretation,misinterpretation,correction and hesitation were often found in the interpreting process.Traditional Chinese Medicine therapy,professional medical terms,body check-up terms and speakers' accent also challenged the interpreter's proficiency.To deal with these challenges and cope with mistakes,the interpreter adopted syntactic linearity,Interpretative Theory and fuzziness skills.Using some coping tactics like eye contact,gesture and checking for details can also improve the quality of interpreting and help the whole process going on smoothly.Through researching and analyzing the interpreter's own experience,some practical methods and valuable suggestion can be provided to the development of preventive medicalinterpreting in the future.
