Fuzziness has long been studied by many philosophers, researchers and scholarsand has become a relatively formal subject of study in the area of linguistics eversince the emergence of Zadeh’s Fuzzy Sets Theory. However, most researchers’focuses are on theoretic study. Empirical studies especially on diplomaticinterpretation are not thorough and specific enough. This thesis will focus on how todeal with fuzziness in diplomatic interpretation. Diplomatic language is thecombination of both precision and fuzziness. Due to its own features, diplomaticinterpretation requires some pragmatic skills to make fuzzy information wellconveyed to the audience. This paper is mainly based on the author’s experience as aconsecutive interpreter for Pakistan’s Ambassador to China—Masood·Khan and theHonorary Chairwoman of the International Fur Federation in Asia Region—DengXiaolan. By analyzing these two speeches, this paper aims to present the problems indiplomatic interpretation caused by fuzziness and put forward some feasible andpractical tactics to handle them.
