This report is based on the translation of the excerpts(Chapter Twenty-three to Thirty-one)of the diary novel A Tiny Bit Marvellous.The author is a famous English comedian and writer,Dawn French.Dawn is blessed with a sense of humor,thus this novel is humorous and emotionally close to readers.The novel mainly consists of the diaries of three characters,and reveals the relationship between teenagers and their parents.The significance lies in its attention to teenagers' inner worlds and its appeal for understanding towards their parents from teenagers.This translation project is under the framework of Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory.According to this theory,translation is a reappearance of original text from semantic level to stylistic level by presenting the natural and appropriate equivalent language.Translators are required to consider receptors' response in addition to remaining faithful to the original text and make the target text understandable and reader-friendly.In the translation process,some challenges,such as comprehension difficulties and confusions about humorous expressions,arose,but were solved by inquiring others and looking up materials.The translator adopted such strategies as literal translation,free translation,annotation and conversion to tackle the difficulties in words,sentences,figures of speech and language styles,so as to make the target text more like authentic Chinese.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One introduces the author,plot,features and significance of the novel.Chapter Two gives a brief introduction to the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida and the applicability of the functional equivalence theory to this novel.Chapter Three states the preparation and revision process and reveals the difficulties in translating.Chapter Four is the quintessence of the report,illustrating the translation skills and methods from four levels to make it clear the applications of the functional equivalence theory.Chapter Five is the conclusion,revealing the harvest gained in the translation process and expecting more suggestions to make the target text better.
