English for Science and Technology(EST)is a common practical style, and the translation of EST is also very important.EST is characterized by its objectivity, accuracy, simplicity, high logicality and seriousness which requires better translating skills. With the development of Sino-EU trade, frictions are increasingly occurring. Moreover, complicated regulation system and standards are developed in EU to regulate the type-approval of scientific and technological products. All these issues are challenging China's export to EU.To solve this problem,Chinese professionals are required to fully understand the standardization documents. Therefore, translators need to improve their translations of these documents. However, few scholars at home focus on the study of translation of standardization documents. In this study, the author aims to explore effective translating strategies of standardization documents. This study is conducted based on the translation of a file named Rules&Regulations On Electronic Cycles in European Union from English to Chinese by the author. As a typical standardization document, the file is full of terms about electronic cycles and EU directives on electronic cycles.Strict product approval and testing system for electronic cycles is developed in EU,which expects higher conformity for electric cycles made by China.Effective translation of these documents can help Chinese professionals better understand the documents and make the products more competitive in the world.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory(F-E Theory)emphasizes on the receptors'responses and pursues a "functional equivalent" style, which is a perfect guidance for EST translation. In this thesis, the author demonstrates a detailed analysis on translation of the file from the levels of lexical expressions, sentences and discourse with the guidance of F-E Theory based on the distinctive features of EST.Skills and methods of EST translation are explored with the guidance of F-E Theory.
