The Relationship Between College Students' Family Function And Codependency: The Mediating Role Of Differentiation Of Self

Good interpersonal relationship can promote individual growth and development.However,it is difficult for people with high level of codependency to maintain a health and stable interpersonal relationship.People who are codependent tend to addict to the dysfunctional relationships,neglect their own needs,pay too much attention to others,and then affect their work,study and life.This study adopted questionnaire survey method.Convenience sampling was used,with the samples comprising 550 undergraduate students from several university in Tianjin.The purpose of this study was to investigate the state of college students'codependency.This study also examined the relationship of college students'codependency with demographic variables,family function and differentiation of self.The results indicated that the percentages of miinimal,mild,moderate and severe codependency are 19.37%,65.42%,14.79%and 0.42%.The results also showed that college students' codependency,family function and differentiation of self were not remarkable difference in gender;Codependency,family function and differentiation of self had significant difference in different grow place;Family function showed obvious differences in the only child or not.While family function and differentiation of self were all significantly predictive of codependency in college students,differentiation of self played a moderating role between family function and codependency in college students.By analysis and discussion,this study drew the following conclusions:(1)The phenomenon of codependency in college students was common,but not serious;(2)College students who grew up in city were more likely to ignore their own needs to help others;(3)Compared to the countryside,college students who grew up in the city had more healthy family functions;Compared with non-only-child,the only-child had better family function;(4)Compared to the city,the emotional reaction to environmental stimuli of the students who grew up in the countryside was more stable;(5)Family function was related with codependency in college students,that was the better family function was,the lower level of codependency would be;(6)Family function was related with differentiation of self in college students,that was the better family function was,the higher level of differentiation of self would be;(7)Differentiation of self was related with codependency in college students,that was the higher level of differentiation of self was,the lower level of codependency would be;(8)Family function affected codependency through differentiation of self in college students.
