A Linguistic Study Of Place Names In Yi County,Hebei Province

Yi County has more than a thousand years’ history and rich cultural legacy.A number of Toponymy and construction methods are related to the historical situation at that time.From the aspect of Toponymy’ formation,nouns are mostly composed of proper names in Yi county,followed by adjectives,and finally by quantitative phrases.the verb component is relatively rare.From the aspect of general names,the settlement category is the most common names,followed by hydrological generic names,and finally the topography and other generic names;From the characteristics of the toponymy’ generation,local native toponymy are generally connected with local materials,use geographical entities as landscape names.As derivative class toponymy,the location derived class toponymy are the most common.In addition to a small number of transfer,conversion of names;Analysis local toponymy’pronounce features from syllables and different pronunciations.Local toponymy are mostly the same as other place,three-syllable Toponymy are the most,and there is a trend to the four-syllable names.Analysis on the different pronunciations of local toponymy and we find out that,the causes of different reading are generally due to the ancient sound left,hysteresis,changes in speech sound and other reasons.Finally,by analyzing the local historical and cultural heritage,the paper explores the relationship between local toponymy and regional cultures.From the linguistic point to view local toponymy have an important significance on toponymy research and local cultural studies.
