Until now, polysemy was an important research topic of lexical semantics.Polysemy refers to a word that has two or more meanings, having formed close relationship among those meanings. This is because people perceive the world and form concepts in infinitely many ways but have with express those infinite concepts in finite lexicon. The relatedness within the sense of "?" and"(?)(?)" in Chinese and Korean contains several complex meanings. There are meanings that are completely exact and meanwhile completely different. But previous studies on the Chinese and Korean verbs "?" and "(?)(?)" mostly referred to the small part of studying "placing" verbs.None has discussed their polysemy or its argument structures or the relation between senses. Therefore, this study aims to discuss the polysemy of the verbs "?" and"(?)(?)" clarify the relation and extension between the meanings, and furthermore proceed with the comparative study. This thesis adopted two different perspectives on linguistic theory-prototype theory and semantic map model.Prototype theory is useful in clearly interpreting the polysemy of a word in specific language.Regarding lexicon's polysemy, semantic map model rather provides perspective on linguistic typology. That is,such method of analysis shows the variation patterns and the universality of polysemy from a cross linguistic standpoint. Therefore, this study, based on prototype theory and semantic map model, comprehensively analyzes the polysemy of two verbs and reveals the meaning, generality and individuality of those two verbs.Chapter 1 introduces the purpose and the meaning of this study. Then a survey studies on how both verbs in China and Korea is made. Also,it briefly reviews the related research from the perspective of semantic map model.Chapter 2 comparatively analyzes the semantic meaning of "?" and "(?)(?)." The study adopts the semantic view of cognitive linguistics, identifies their image schema according to corpus distribution, and suggests the prototypical sense of "?" and "(?)(?)" based on the result of the study.Furthermore, the analysis the relationship among various meanings of both verbs led to conclusion that the two verbs established the meaning category based on family resemblance of prototypical meaning.Chapter 3 comparatively analyzes the two verb' s semantic components and the choice restriction on semantic components.Based on the amount, type, sequence of semantic components of the two verbs, the study summarizes the realizable basic sentence patterns and considers the relationship between the meaning and components of the two verbs. Also,it studies the selectional restriction on meaning component.Chapter 4,based on the semantic map model, analyzes the polysemous network of "placing" verbs in six languages, constructs the conceptual space of notion "put" and draws the semantic maps of "?" and"(?)(?)."Through the cross-linguistic comparison,we can represent the polysemy of the two verbs.Chapter 5 is the conclusion. This part summarizes the key points of the whole text and points out the deficiency of this text.
