This translation report is the summary of chapters I,II and VI E-C(English-to-Chinese)translation projects of A Mind for Numbers. The project has about 12,000 English words.Meanwhile,it is a personal simulation training to improve my translation skill.A Mind for Numbers is a popular science book, written by Dr.Oakley,in which multiple rhetoric skills are employed to reveal how to effectively learn math and science. It exposes that learning math and science requires creative and analytical thinking. The structure of this translation report mainly contains four chapters. The first part gives a general introduction to the task of E-C Translation of A Mind for Numbers(Excerpts)including the text features analysis and the text type analysis before translating about the source materials. The source text features are presented from the representative lexical and rhetoric characteristics such as term characteristics and metaphor characteristics. In addition, text type analysis provides the relative theory in translating. Therefore, the source text is the informative text which can decide the translation approaches. This chapter provides appropriate translation methods. The second part gives the description of difficulties in lexical translation and metaphor translation. As for difficulties in lexical translation, there exist two aspects: one is that some words have no corresponding words in Chinese;one another is that the extension of meaning is hard to translate without the context.Meanwhile, there are two embarrassments concluded in the translation process. One embarrassment is that I can lose the image in the metaphor after translating.Another one is that target language readers cannot understand the target text because the target text still remains too many cultural features of the source language. In the third part, representative words are chosen from terms, compound words and spoken words to analyze how to solve the difficulties in lexical translation, and the chapter also provides some methods for metaphor translation and explains how to deal with the difficulties in metaphor translation with examples. The summary of the translation report will be given in the last chapter. The translation task greatly improves my ability to solve the difficulties and problems of the lexical and metaphor translation, which will be helpful for the development of my professions. In addition,it can provide effective methods to learn math and science for Chinese students.
