With the rapid development of globalization,there are more and more cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.With the deepening of reform and opening up,Chinese readers are eager to know the outside world.In recent years,a great number of foreign master pieces and good translation works have poured into China market,Chinese readers are eager to know these foreign celebrities? life experiences and ideas,which can help them have a better understanding of the relevant works and enrich their literary knowledge.Hence,translators should play a positive role in translating biography texts and undertake the mission of promoting cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.This translation report is guided by the Text Type Theory of Chatherine Reiss.The author takes examples from Chapter Two and Chapter Four from A Great Unrecorded History:A New Life of E.M.Forster and analyzes translation methods for informative and expressive texts.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction,which introduces the background,purpose and significance of the report.Chapter Two describes the translation task,which introduces the sources and content of the translation materials.Chapter Three introduces the work that the author has done to accomplish this translation task.Chapter Four introduces theoretical basis of this report,the author briefly illustrates the Text Type Theory,then analyzes cases and summarizes translation methods.Chapter Five is the conclusion,which summarizes the author?s experience and the limitations of this translation practice.According to Reiss? theory,biography is a kind of text which lies between informative and expressive texts.When translating informative text,we should focus on the content of the source text.When it comes to expressive text,the aesthetic form becomes more important.We can improve the quality of translation works by combining theory with practice.The main purpose of this translation report is to provide a certain reference to the translation exchange and learning of biography texts.
