The English To Chinese Translation Report On The Mongol Art Of War(Chapters 7-9)

This thesis is an English to Chinese translation report.The original works selected is from the newest monograph The ongol Art of War by Prof.Timothy May who is a famous historian specializing in the history of the Mongols and the Yuan Dynasty.Its chapters 7-9 are selected to translate,respectively narrating the opponents of the Mongols,typical battles reflecting the Mongol art of wars as well as great values and influences of the Mongol art of wars.There are more than 30,000 words translated into Chinese totally.Firstly,the report briefly describes the background of translation,the aim of translation,the reason of translation and the structure of translation report.It briefly describes the writer and the main contents of the source text as well as its characteristics of literary form and language.It also briefly describes pre-translation preparations,the process of translation and proofreading.Secondly,the report lays emphasis on the analysis of the difficulties in translation and their corresponding translation methods.The difficulties are reflected in the followings:(1)Chinese translations of the culture-bound words and the weapon terminologies;(2)the comprehension and Chinese translations of the attributive clauses,the adverbial clauses and long sentences which are complicated structurally.The report thinks the following translation methods can be adopted to deal with these difficulties mentioned above:(1)footnotes are added to translate culture-bound words;(2)footnotes with illustrations are adopted to translate weapon terminologies;(3)preposition and postposition are adopted to reconstruct the word orders of the attributive clauses in the source text and then translate them into Chinese;(4)sequential method and variable sequence method are used to translate part of adverbial clauses in the source text;(5)division and recasting are adopted to lower the difficulties of the long sentences in the source text and reconstruct the expression ways that conform to the Chinese academic monograph.Finally,the main contents of the translation report and the experience from the translation report are concluded.
