| This is an English to Chinese translation report on The Mongols. Two chapters are selected from the Mongols written by British scholar David Morgan. The author chooses this book for several reasons.Firstly, this book has no Chinese version now.Secondly, books about Mongolian history written by western scholars are relatively rare in the market because of translation difficulties. Therefore, the author wants to make some contributions to the research of Mongolian history.Thirdly, the author,as a Mongolian student, hopes to enrich the knowledge about Mongolian history and culture. The source text belongs to the historical text, which possesses a large number of glossaries and sentences with cultural background information,so the difficult points are how to translate those terms accurately and enable readers to understand the historical and cultural background information sufficiently. As a means of translation compensation, adding annotation is a useful method in translating historical text, which can not only make readers understand the connotations of words well but also help them to grasp the main idea of sentences or paragraphs.Annotations can also provide background information and explain translation methods or views of the author. In addition, sometimes, the comprehensive annotations are also needed. Therefore, the author attempts to use annotations to compensate some words and sentences, and convey the language and cultural information of the source text faithfully. In this thesis, annotations are classified according to its content, including annotations on words, annotations on sentences with the historical and cultural background information, and annotations on argumentation.Meanwhile, the author explores the principles of adding annotations in the historical text. Finally, the author summarizes the translation report. On the one hand, this report shows that adding annotations in the historical text is helpful for readers to understand the historical and cultural background of the original text.On the other hand, the author also analyzes the shortcomings of this translation practice and puts forward some suggestions. |
