A Study On Xueyuan Society In Guide Prefecture

In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties,associations of literati were very popular and among them Xueyuan Society was particularly famous.Hou Fangyu,the founder of Xueyuan Society,was an influential litterateur in this period.Song Luo,a rising star of Xueyuan Society,was chiefly in charge of the literary circle of the south regions of the Yangtze River.Song,together with Wang Shizhen,Zhu Yizun and Wang Wan,was known as the “Ten Gifted Scholars in Qing Dynasty”.Currently,the studies on Hou and Song are too numerous to enumerate,but the overall studies on Xueyuan Society are not that satisfying.Therefore,this thesis is going to take Xueyuan Society as its research object and further explore the influence of the regional culture of Guide area on Xueyuan Society on the basis of the long history and profound culture of this area and the turbulent social environment during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The thesis will also make an analysis of the communication activities,literary thought and writings of Xueyuan Society as well as the impact of Xueyuan Society on the literary circle of Zhongzhou and on the style of writing of the time.This thesis mainly includes three parts: the introduction,text and epilogue.The first part gives a brief introduction to the basic conditions and current studies on Xueyuan Society,the significance of studying Xueyuan Society and the research ideas and methods of the thesis,etc.The second part,which contains four chapters,discusses the influence of Guide culture on Xueyuan Society,the communication activities of Xueyuan Society,the literary thought of Xueyuan Society and its literary writings respectively.The final part of the thesis has explored the influence of Xueyuan Society on the literature of Zhongzhou and on the literary world during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.The first chapter discusses the relationship between the regional culture of Guide and Xueyuan Society.The long history and splendid culture of Guide area,the respect and yearning for Liangyuan of the members of Xueyuan Society,and the strongatmosphere of culture and education of Guide,are the important conditions for the establishment of Xueyuan Society.At the same time,the author also analyzes other conditions for the establishment of Xueyuan Society,such as time and personal factors.The second chapter studies the communication activities of Xueyuan Society.The first section of this chapter sorts out the internal communication activities of Xueyuan Society in chronological order.The members of the Society have a close relationship with each other.They often talk about current affairs,drink and write poems together.In the second section,the author explores the communication between the members of Xueyuan Society and the scholars in Zhongzhou.Members of Xueyuan Society make friends through literature and their friends vary from powerful officials,young members from aristocratic families,to poor scholars.The third section mainly discusses Xueyuan Society's communication with Southeast scholars.Xueyuan Society has a close relationship with Fu Society and also communicates frequently with Yunjian scholars and Yangxian scholars.In the third chapter,based on the text,the author mainly studies the literary thoughts of Xueyuan Society.The literary schools of the Ming Dynasty emerged one after another and the literary thought flourished in this period.Apart from these factors,the influence of the regional culture,literary traditions and other factors,finally led to Xueyuan Society's proposal of literature restoration.The Society tried to pursue “Zheng Shi” and there formed a poetic thought of showing respect for Du Fu and worshiping literary pursuits.In addition,it also advocated the ancient prose theory.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the creation of poetry and prose of Xueyuan scholars.Their poems have distinct regional and time features with descriptions of hometown sceneries,frequent wars,pities for people's livelihood and their thoughts,and so on.Their biographical texts are mostly refined and vivid;their argumentative essays have strict argumentation and are of great momentum.Hou Fangyu has a close connection with Xueyuan scholars and his literary creation is influenced by Xueyuan Society.In the last part of the thesis,the author analyzes the influence of XueyuanSociety on Zhongzhou literature and even the literary circle of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.Xueyuan scholars and the literati of Zhongzhou talked about literature at that time,which promoted the prosperity of literature of Zhongzhou.At the same time,Xueyuan scholars worked together with Jiangnan literati and advanced the transformation of the literary style of that time.
