A Discourse Study Of The Late Night Talk Shows In The United States

The late night talk show has been developed for more than 60 years,and it has become an important part of American TV culture.As the classic form of talk show,the late night talk show combines news,celebrity interviews,comedy shows and band performances.In view of the context of social transformation,the traditional form of the program has been overturned.A new generation of late night talk show highlight their own characteristics after the phenomenon like the change of the host and aging problems of the audience.The development and transformation of these factors including the comic,host humorous style,personal charm and social media's effect make the late night talk show,the traditional programs with historic development,improve,enrich and constantly keep vital in long period of time.So that more and more young people has become the new generation of late night talk show loyal audience.Discourse is the core of the talk show.From the host to interview guests and the scene audience,all of the discourse subject are in a free and open discourse space and field of the late night talk show to make a "meaningful expression" under the discourse system.In this paper,the "discourse theory" is the theoretical framework to study the late night talk show text.The essay is the transition and enhance of the excessive speculation level from the historical TV to learn from TV theory.The interpretation of the program text is carrying out from multidimensional degree from the discourse subject,discourse structure,discourse rhetoric,discourse space,discourse context,discourse identity to the social function of discourse.Combined with the social and historical background of the United States,the analysis of the program text is from the perspective of the late night talk show program's history to the face of the challenges of the times.This paper is divided into five parts: the introduction part mainly introduces the research background and issues,including research status and significance and methods of the research;the first part is the overview of the late night talk show,analysis of text overview is took away by summarizing the development and characteristics of the program;the second part is analysis and explain on several dimensions of late night talk show discourse structure;the third part discusses the relationship full of checks and balances among the late night talk show discourse,ideology,and power on the basis of the process of discourse constructing the recognition and making negotiation,and conducting investigation from the perspective of television media discourse and expression;the fourth part is the analysis on the audience's cultural interpretation of late night talk show from the survey results based on the investigation of audience preferences.
