A Study On Identity Construction Of Hosts' Advising Discourse In Radio Night Talk Shows

Advising discourse is a kind of common discourse in daily life.More advising discourse studies could take the host's advising discourse in radio night talk shows as the research object.Politeness principle and speech act theory are frequently adopted for previous advising discourse studies,which seldom consider dynamic characteristics of discourse.Therefore,new theoretical framework is indispensable for advising discourse studies so as to study dynamic characteristics of discourse.This study takes Bucholtz and Hall's five principles on identity study as the theoretical framework.It takes the host's advising discourse in Lingyun Night Talk Show which is a radio night talk show of Guizhou Economic Broadcasting Radio as the research object to analyze the relations between the host's advising discourse and identity construction.It focuses on the host's temporally interactional identities in advising discourse from a micro-level and changeable perspective rather than the identity as a host from a macro-level and stable perspective.It randomly selects 50 dialogues between the host and listeners from November,2015 to December,2015 as the language data.This study mainly discusses the following questions:(1)How is the main identity constructed under the guidance of indexicality principle and relationality principle?(2)How are the assistant identities constructed under the guidance of indexicality principle and relationality principle?(3)Why does the host construct such identities in advising discourse under the guidance of partialness principle?The major findings of this study include:(1)The main identity constructed by the host of Linyun Night Talk Show in advising discourse is behavior guider.Offering advice by clarifying reasons,offering advice based on giving alternative conditions,offering advice based on admitting listeners' current circumstances and using short words with advising intention are four ways to construct main identity as a behavior guider in the host's advising discourse.(2)The assistant identities constructed by the host of Linyun Night Talk Show in advising discourse are problem evaluator and affection comforter.Offering opposite opinions,showing attitudes,estimating possibility of attaining certain results and analyzing reasons for causing problems are four ways to construct identity as a problem evaluator.Greeting listeners actively,showing understanding of listeners' feelings and giving well wishes to listeners are three ways to construct identity as an affection comforter.(3)There are mainly two purposes for constructing the identities in advising discourse.The first purpose is to meet the requirements of radio night talk shows.The host of Lingyun Night Talk Show constructs three different kinds of identities in advising discourse so as to meet psychological needs of listeners and play a guiding role for the public.The second purpose is to achieve better advising effect.The host of Lingyun Night Talk Show uses different ways to construct identities so as to enhance reasonability of advice and reduce harm to listeners' negative face.This study is beneficial for broadening the research scope of advising discourse study and studying advising discourse from a dynamic perspective.The major findings of this study are beneficial for offering certain reference for other radio night talk shows.Moreover,they offer reference for offering and understanding advising discourse in daily life.
