Gabriel Fauré(1845-1924)was a French composer,educator and organist with great influence in the Romanticism Times.He was also one of the representatives of the French national music who has devoted his life to the development of the national music,and composed numerous excellent works.His achievements and contributions in music also made him indispensable in the European art history.Fauré's work encompasses a variety of genres including piano music,art songs,music for theatre,opera,and chamber music.Hi piano compositions occupy an important position among all his creative works and throughout his composition career.His major sets of piano works include thirteen nocturnes,thirteen barcarolles,nine preludes,six impromptus,four valses-caprices,and so on.When compared to the composers of his generation,like César Franck and Charles Camille Saint-Saens,Gabriel Faure's music is less known in countries other than France.However,he played an important role in the development of piano music in Europe,particularly in France.He strived to make progress in an innovative way,but at the same time,he consolidated and carried forward the characteristics of French national music.Fauré's work has been described as continuing the Romanticism and opening the gate leading to the impressionism of the 20 th century."Prelude" is composed by Fauré in his later years,which is another masterpiece following Chopin's "Prelude" in this area.This work was created between 1910 and 1911,in which every song is with a small structure but diversity performance techniques,precise and rigorous ideas and very rich content.This paper aims to analyze Fauré's unique compositional style and understand the rich connotation of his work through comprehensive and systematic study of the creative techniques of the nine preludes.
