Memory Lost In "space"

Patrick Modiano has been writting novels for 50 years since 1967.During the long period of time publishing fantastic novels,Patrick Modiano has won a large amount of reader as well as honor.In his work of about 30 masterpieces,similiar theme of identity and self appeared time after time,however,it always touch us deeply in heart in different way.For his obsession in city Paris,he placed almost all his character in this city.Readers could follow their steps and see Paris various in different eras.In Modiano's modernism novels,spatial experience is clear and plentiful.During the transformation period in 20 th Centry,theory of space in narrative became a popular theoretical tools in modenistic novel criticism.Compared with classical novel critical theory,this young aged theory is more fitting in analyzing modern novels which contains features such as fragmented narrative,multiple narrative and Multiple time narrative.In this paper,I will analysis the relationship between Paris space,Identity and Slef in Modiano's Novels by using theory of space.The paper is devided into three parts.Introduction part contains a brief illustration of Modiano's style and main theme.It also contains a summarize of previous research results.An introduction of space theory as well as a definition of“identity”and“self” are placed in this part,too.Body part contains close reading.To be specific,this paper choose Rue des boutiques obscures,Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue and Accident Nocturne as research object.These three modern novels took Paris as background.Space theory is applicable in the analysis.Each novel is analysised respectively.First,this paper analysis representative space in the novel,Second.this paper analysis relationship among space,“identity”and“self”.Finally,for additional discussion,this text take history background and culture background into considersion.Conclusion part summarize the similarities and differences in their Spatial problem processing.
