TV simultaneous interpretation, in this thesis, is studied based on TV live broadcasting, rather than post production. Unlike traditional subtitle translation or dubbing, TV simultaneous interpretation is more efficient, enabling local audiences to obtain the first-hand information and understand what is happening in a breaking event in good time.Despite these advantages, TV simultaneous interpretation is very difficult to handle with. For example, many news breaks out abruptly, giving interpreters no time to prepare; interpreting for a far-away event does not allow interpreters to communicate with speech makers; in an interview or talk show, interpreters are in great pressure as guest interactions are unpredictable. To cope with these difficulties, interpreters need to apply excessive efforts, which are highly limited in simultaneous interpretation. Thus, errors happen frequently as interpreters coordinate efforts faultily. Against this background, this thesis tries to analyze the possible challenges and errors, so as to do its part to help improve simultaneous interpretation in TV broadcasting. In detail, this thesis will compare the three simultaneous interpretations of 2012 American presidential election debates by the Phoenix TV with the three made by New Tang Dynasty Television, Tencent Video and CNN (Cable News Network) respectively. Based on the Effort Model, the thesis will analyze the possible challenges in TV simultaneous interpretation from four perspectives:listening and analysis, short-term memories, production and coordination. This thesis summarizes previous studies and collects reflections of experienced interpreters. There are also many diagrams and concrete instances. In a word, the thesis spares no effort to put forward innovative and convincing results, hoping to help enhance simultaneous interpretation on TV.
