Effort Distribution In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation

This report is based on the English-Chinese simulated simultaneous interpretation practice of a symposium,which was about the future development of mental health technology and held in Washington,in 2017.The symposium was hosted by Torie Bosch who is the editor of Future Tense.The interaction between the 6 psychologists and the host is mainly in the form of Q&A.The author chose this corpus to simulate the simultaneous interpretation between English and Chinese.By recording and analyzing the practical process of simulated interpretation,the author summarizes the appropriate translation methods based on the characteristics of the corpus and the problems encountered in the simulation,in order to achieve better interpretation effect.By analyzing the source language and the target language,the author finds that the selected corpus tends to informal style.With a certain degree of speciality,the corpus covers professional knowledge of psychology,which leads to the large amounts of information in the speech.At the same time,most of the speakers' conversation is improvisational,so the problem of unclear expression and loose sentence patterns occurs from time to time.According to the characteristics of the selected corpus,the interpreter used Gile's Effort Model of simultaneous interpretation to coordinate the interpreting activities and analyzed the problem of effort distribution and the applied methods after the English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation simulation.In the process of simultaneous interpretation,aiming at the effort distribution problem of the mental stage,the Listening and Analysis effort and the Memory effort,the interpreter adopted the methods of chunking,omission,as well as the methods of anticipation to actively reduce the burden from L and M and ensure the balance of effort distribution.As to the verbal stage,the Production effort,the interpreter adopted the methods of generalization and waiting to integrate the information of the source text,so that the simplification and coherence of the target language is improved.Based on the practice of simulated interpretation,the thesis explores the distribution of three basic efforts and the overall coordination in English and Chinese simultaneous interpretation and analyzes the appropriate interpretation methods to confront the effort distribution in the interpreting process.The author hoped the thesis can be used as a reference for other interpreters when conducting this kind of interpreting task.
