This is a translation report written in accordance with the E-C translation of Chapter 11,Family Law of Introduction to the Law of the United States compiled by David S.Clark and Tugrul Ansay,professors from famous law schools.Introduction to the Law of the United States is a very popular textbook among teachers and students in most America law schools.This book gives a brief introduction to all law branches under the American system.Chapter 11 illustrates the family law of the United States in such detailed manners as the sources of family law,no-fault divorce,the cohabitation alternative to marriage and divorce,contractual modification of marriage,dollars on divorce,child custody after divorce and the same-sex partnership(a hot-discussed topic in recent years).Extremely different as their legal cultures and systems are,,with the frequent communication and further cooperation between China and America,it is of great significance to have a better understanding of the American law,of course including the family law,thus benefiting our borrowing its scientific essence in the process of legislationThis thesis is aimed at exploring the translation of the legal words or terms of Chapter 11 on the lexical features of legal English.There are 4 chapters in this report.In Chapter 1 the background information,the significance and the structure of the report are introduced.Chapter 2 discusses the semantic relation of some legal words,such as polysemy and synonymy.Chapter 3 is the main part of this report including the lexical features of legal English and translation methods.Chapter 4 is the conclusion including some limitations,suggestions proposed by the author in the process of this translation.
