A Translation Report Of The Experience Of Gross National Happiness As Development Framework

This paper is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text is an excerpt from The Experience of Gross National Happiness as Development Framework, which was issued by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2015. The Experience of Gross National Happiness as Development Framework describes Bhutan’s unique socioeconomic development framework in terms of Gross National Happiness (GNH) from both theoretical and practical perspectives and dialectically concludes GNH’s advantages and disadvantages.This translation report focuses discussion on describing the difficulties encountered in the process of translation and proposing some tentative solutions to the mentioned difficulties by referring to text typology. The report also presents a serial of measures to check and revise the translated version so as to ensure the translation quality.The translation report consists five chapters. The first chapter introduces the task background, research objective, significance and the structure of the report. The second chapter describes the theory of text typology, discusses the relationship between text typology and the source text. The third chapter is the translation process, describing the preparation, steps in translating and items to be done after translation. The fourth chapter is about translation difficulties and solutions. The translation difficulties can be classified into three levels: lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. Specifically, accuracy is required when it comes to the translation of economic terms and synonyms; complex and passive voice sentences should be translated in a natural and fluent way; the coherence and cohesion of the discourse should be taken into consideration. The translator demonstrates the solution to the difficulties with concrete cases. The fifth chapter is a conclusion based on the discussion above.
