Based on the division of textual functions, Katharina Reiss in her book Translation Criticism: The Potentials&Limitations classifies texts into four types, namely content-focused text, form-focused text, appeal-focused text and audio-medial text, and also proposes appropriate translation criteria for evaluation of all kinds of translations and translation methods, which all contribute to objective analysis of functions of the source text, and proper translation strategies according to linguistic characteristics of texts with different functions. Consequently this theory definitely is of validity and explanatory power. Hence, under the guidance of Katharina Reiss’s text typology, this report discusses the academic translation with the case study of translation of Chapter2of Translation Criticism: The Potentials&Limitations. It mainly has made efforts in:1. Translation preparations. Firstly, basically know the source text background and content thus further to grasp the theory of text typology and analyze the language function to define the text type, i.e. content-focused text. Then learn some theories of Reiss and translation criticism for a comprehensive understanding of this theory. Finally, adopt corresponding translation tools in accordance with different requirements.2. Translation problems and solutions. Such problems as synonyms and long sentence translation will be given particular attention from the linguistic and the non-linguistic levels, and be analyzed and solved by illustrations in accordance with those criteria including semantic equivalence, lexical adequacy, grammatical correctness and stylistic correspondence. This report applies Reiss’s text typology to translation of academic works thus adding an application case of this theory. It also proves the feasibility and validity of this theory and a salutary attempt.
