Ron Hubbard,a famous pulp fiction writer, has published hundreds of work, and sold over millions of copies around the world. As a well-known and most beloved writer, his books have been translated into 32 languages and sold in 107 countries. The international book market praised his works as eternal best-sellers.However,the translator have noticed that there are few Chinese versions of his books;thus the translator wants to introduce his work to Chinese readers. The Iron Duke,as one of his masterpieces,is a well-written adventure novel with vivid language, clear logic, numerous foreshadowing, and its main characters have distinctive features. Therefore, the translator selected this book as her translation practice project. The translation of pulp fiction belongs to literary translation. Thus,in its translation process, the translator needs to maintain the original taste of the work on the basis of rendering its meaning clearly. This requirement coincides with the functional equivalence theory put forward by the famous American translation theorist Eugene Nida, who holds that the essence of the functional equivalence theory is to establish the closest natural equivalence between the source text and the target text.It lays great emphasis on the response of target text readers and aims to produce a similar response between source text readers reading source text and target text readers reading target texts. The most important and difficult part of this translation project centers around three aspects, that is,the translation of culture-specific words, long and difficult sentences and dialogues between characters. The translator hopes that this translation report can shed light on some general questions in the translation of pulp fiction.Through this translation project, the translator has found that the functional equivalence theory shall be used as a guideline to keep the stylistic features and language styles of the original text.Specifically speaking,in translating the culture specific words, the translator shall use literal translation, and alter the original images with corresponding images in the Chinese language or use notes to produce equivalent effects:in dealing with the long and difficult sentences, the translator shall restructure the original sentence to make target language readers have essentially the same feeling with source text readers;and to deal with the main characters' dialogue,it requires the translator to pay more attention to the main character's personality and its co-text,and use literal translation or alter the dialogue structure to maintain the equivalent effects.
