An E-C Translation Report For The First And Eighth Chapters Of Motherland

The report is based on the translation practice of chapter one and chapter eight from the novel Motherland.Motherland is a historical fiction which describes the living situation of one German family during World War II.Different from other novels about Germany during World War II,Motherland tells a story about the struggle of people especially the motherhood,toughness and sacrifice of women from the perspective of ordinary German's living.Wartime fighting,combats,Jewish and Holocaust are barely mentioned in it.In addition,the character and the plots description is extremely intriguing.The unique perspective and writing style contribute to the charm of the novel.The report consists of four parts: description of the translation task,translation process,translation theory and case studies of the translation strategies used and summary.Part one introduces the main content,writing inspiration,the historical background,source text type as well as the author and her writing style.Part two presents the preparation work before translation,the process of during-translation and post translation.Part three introduces the functional equivalence theory and strategies applied in the translation through case study.The translator illustrated three aspects of equivalence: lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,and stylistic equivalence.The last part is the summary in which the experiences and feelings of translation practice are elaborated.This report deepens the understanding of the qualities of a good translator.Some translating strategies and skills are summed up.The report laid a foundation for further translation work in the future for the translator.
