Ethnicity,Identity And Music:The Musical Construction of Place, edited by Martin Stokes,English ethnomusicologist and anthropologist,is an important treatise on musicology and anthropology.Identity and ethnicity have become important concepts in ethnomusicology.A number of scholars have recently shown that music can be a political tool. And no ethnomusicologist can ignore the rapid changes taking place in the music of virtually every culture. The holders of music traditions have been forced to react, and in so doing, tend to break down established categories of'folk','art','classical','popular',and so on.The holders may fight to maintain an indigenous heritage as a symbol to represent who they are.Music is not only to provide a marker for the construction of space, but also the way the space is changed. The book is a collection of nine different case studies, with different concerns including popular music, folk music, ritual music and classical music, from a Poland musician to a character of a Brazilian novel, from Ireland to Australia, combined with anthropology and musicology, and is an attempt to build bridges between anthropology and music. The diversity of academic articles provided by nine writers represents an integrity of the academic researches, and is of great benefit to our deeper academic researches. The book review, written by the translator, mainly deals with five aspects of the book:the logic coherence, ideas and conceptions, key concepts, writing features and methodology.Besides, the translator also introduces briefly Martin Stokes and his works, demonstrates the importance of translating this book, and shares some personal opinions about translations for ethnomusicology literature.
