The study of ethnic issues has been the focus of the research of scholars at home andabroad. Scholars from all over the world have done a lot of research about identityconstruction and the formation of ethnicity and race. This report is based on theEnglish-Chinese translation of parts of the third and fourth chapters of Ethnicity and Race byStephen Cornell and Douglas Hartmann. The volume of translation is about10,000Chinesecharacters. The source text is mainly about the theories on the formation of ethnicity and raceand ethnic and racial identity construction. A comparative analysis between primordialism andcircumstantialism is presented in the ending part of chapter three. A constructionist approachis introduced in the beginning part of chapter four. This report explores the following aspects: pre-translational preparations, case study inthe translation process, and a conclusion about the translation. During the pre-translationalpreparation, the translator briefly introduces the translation project and presents the theoreticalframework to guide the translation; the case study analyzes the difficult points during thetranslation process from word and sentence levels. A conclusion is drawn about the wholetranslation process in the end.
