In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,females began to awaken because of the dissemination of western learning and the undertaking of the heavy responsibility for the country.As the translated literature prevailed,translation of the western novels played a historical mission in developing civil wisdom.Since then,female translators appeared.Chen Hongbi's translation activities mainly relied on the magazine Xiaoshuolin.And her works were mainly published in this magazine from1907 to 1911,namely,the English science fiction Dianguan of Jiahan,the detective fiction Le dossier No.113(written by Emile Gaboriau)and the anonymous historical novel SugelanDuliji.As one of the pioneers in female intellectual group in late Qing Dynasty,she was well known for her translation in the historical period of the establishment of modern novels as well as the blooming of literary translation.Her translation had various subjects,including science,history and detective,which enabled the initiate meanings of novel translation during this period.Chen Hongbi's translation made great contribution to discovering and doing research on the achievement of female translators' works in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China.And Chen Hongbi was also regarded as one of the representatives on literary translation research.This paper emphatically analyzes the literary achievement of Chen Hongbi's three works and tries to figure out the subjects and achievements of her works,and then provides fundamental materials for the revaluation of Chen Hongbi's position in the history of literary translation.This paper consists of three parts: Introduction,Content and Conclusion.Firstly,the introduction presents the background that Chen Hongbi raised in her research of translation study,including Chen Hongbi's life,as well as the collection,the collation and the research of translation works.And this part also generally summarizes the significance and evaluation of this paper.Secondly,the context of this paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter analyses science and love in Dianguan and discusses the double theme and its critical significance towards reality under the background of the emergence of science fiction.The second chapter recalls the evolution process from traditional historical romance to modern historical novels,analyzing the features of Sugelan Duliji on its historical narrative and influence on the reality in late Qing Dynasty.The third chapter discusses traditional detective novels as well as the emergency of detective novels trend in late Qing Dynasty,emphasizing on analyzing the art of the extraordinary plots in Le dossier No.113,and tries to summarize Chen Hongbi's contribution to detective novels.Finally,the conclusion demonstrates the artistic value of Chen Hongbi's translation works as well as her significance on women's literary translation in late Qing Dynasty.
