The Eastern Miscellany And The Change Of Chinese Literature From Ancient Times To Modern Times (1904-1919)

The Eastern Miscellany is the first large-scale comprehensive journal in the modern history lasting for 44 years which has witnessed the development of Chinese modem literature.This paper is oriented towards the journal from 1904 to 1919 as the main research object of this phase,which emphasizes on the literariness of the Eastern Miscellany and the features of the connection between the old and the new.We try to find out the obscured literature phenomenon of this period and restore the overall condition of literary development.In the introduction part,this paper gives an overview of the Eastern Miscellany,and explains the change of ancient and modern literature in brief.The first chapter is the literary standpoint of the Eastern Miscellany.This part discusses the founder,the conception of the editor,the literariness,and the literary standpoint of the journal,which has a profound effect on the latter two chapters.The second chapter describes the development of the Eastern Miscellany and its author groups.This part focuses on the text analysis.Represented by early literary translators,the last batch of prosperous old poets,traditional literary critics,and emerging foreign literary writers whose literatures have witnessed the change of the ancient literature and modern literature,it gives a detailed discussion of the journal.The third chapter is the representation and the meaning that the Eastern Miscellany runs through ancient and modern times.This part illustrates the reasons why the journal can run through ancient and modern times and the meaning of it,which consists of the extension of the journal and runs through the early appearance of the literature development.At last,this paper makes judgement about the literature features of this period including the mixture of old and new as well as the complicated situation in the conclusion.Moreover,it gives an overview of the development of the Eastern Miscellany dating from 1920.As a witness in the process of Chinese literature from ancient times to modern times,Oriental magazine blends Chinese and Western literature,the old and new literature,the journal blends Chinese and Western literature,the old and new literature.With this characteristic,it shows its historical existence and significance in thedevelopment structure with full of tension.There is no doubt that it is worthy of our more comprehensive and in-depth study.Through the study of the journal,we found that there is no absolute opposition between new and old,traditional and modern can coexist,and old and new have been in the evolution.It can be said that the Eastern Miscellany provides us a kind of progressive change and shows the paradigm of the study of ancient and modern literatures.
