Ancient and modern Chinese characters generated from the development of the same word in different styles, that is, to express the same meaning, because of different times. The research on the relationship between ancient and modern Chinese characters can reduce barriers to ancient books, which provides us with a wealth of materials and many valuable advice to further study the change of word shape,sound and meaning.There are many ancient words in Eastern Han Ban Gu's "Hanshu". Tang Dynasty Yan Shigu's "Hanshu Note" learned from 23 notes on the basis of the explanations of ancient and modern Chinese characters, which provides the first-hand materials and has high research value.We research on Tang Dynasty ancient and modern Chinese characters in "Hanshu Note" mainly from three aspects:First, from the style notes of ancient and modern Chinese characters, we discovered that Yan Shigu's notes have the characteristics of text notes, lacking of fixed style notes. Therefore, we need identify the ancient and modern characters in Yan Shigu's "Hanshu Note" to find their regularity instead of using them immediately.Second, we inspect the features of ancient and modern Chinese characters in the "Han Shu Note". The research on Tang Dynasty ancient and modern Chinese characters from their pronunciation, shape, meaning confirms that: similar or identical voice between the ancient and modern Chinese characters is the main link between them; this word meaning, with the extended meaning from the ancient word, is the main part of semantic link between them; increasing the radical (mainly Yi Fu) on the basis of ancient word is the main way to form modern Chinese characters.Third, comparing the evolution of the Tang Dynasty ancient and modern Chinese characters in "Hanshu Note" and application of modern language, we discover that from the Tang Dynasty to modern 1,400 years, the relationship and application between ancient and modern Chinese characters have not experienced major changes, reflecting the relative stability between the Chinese characters of the different times, which is the main trend of continued development and constant communication of Chinese characters. Furthermore, the Chinese characters progress from these evolutions and developments shows that Chinese characters have constant self-improvement and self-transformation functions in their application.
