As China's international influence continuously enhanced, the cultural exchange between China and the Western countries are becoming more and more frequent.Translation, being a tool of cultural exchanges between China and Western countries, plays an increasingly important role. There are different kinds of translation, which includes the translation of English literature. In order to further push forward the development of English literary translation, more and more scholars begin to pay close attention to the history of English literary translation and the study of it.Taking relevance theory as the theoretical guidance, this paper goes into a full elaboration of the basic conceptions of relevance theory, such as ostensive-inferential communication model, relevance and optimal relevance, and cognitive context. Then it comprehensively reviews the linguistic features and stylistic characteristics of The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English. On the basis of this, the paper studies the translation of the entire development of the Oxford history of literary translation in English. This paper, taking The Oxford History of Literary Translation in English co-edited by Gordon Braden,Robert Cummings and Stuart Gillespie as an example, analyzes and summarizes the translation of the Oxford history of English literary translation with specific cases, which is from the perspective of lexical and syntactic translation. With some cases chosen from the translation work of The xford History of Literary Translation in English, the paper conducts an analysis on how to grasp the communicative clues efficiently to represent the original ostensive intentions of the source text and realize the communicative intentions under the guidance of relevance theory. This paper helps the author further deepen the awareness and understanding of relevance theory via a synthetic analysis of translation theory and practice, and it summarizes some practical translation methods applied in translation, which ensures that the communicative effect of the translated text and that of the original one realize not only the maximize relevance but also the optimal relevance, eventually achieving a successful communication. The paper is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is an introduction, which mainly discusses the background of the research, the brief introduction of the source text and the significance of the report.Chapter Two is the preparation of translation, which includes the research of parallel texts, the text analysis and teamwork.Chapter Three is about relevance theory, mainly introducing relevance theory and relevance translation theory, which lays a theoretical foundation for the translation study of this paper.Chapter Four is case study.Under the guidance of relevance theory,it analyses and summarizes the application of relevance theory in translation process with specific cases from source text at lexical and syntactic level.Chapter Five is a conclusion, which concludes the translation experience and points out the deficiencies in the process of translation, and clears the direction of future translation. It is hoped that this paper will be conducive to the practice of some similar text translation like the translation of the history of literary translation.
