| This is a translation practice report based on the dialogues in Camino Winds by John Grisham.This book is a detective novel which is about the mysterious death of the best-selling novelist Nelson.There are many colloquial words employed in this book.The translation examples of the report are based on the dialogues in chapter one to chapter three.The dialogue between characters in the novel is usually the core of the whole text,which plays a very important role in shaping characters and advancing the plot.In different contexts,the language of the characters conveys different information.Based on the linguistic features of the fiction text,the translator analyzes the cases from the lexical and syntactic parts under the guidance of relevance theory and applies appropriate translation techniques to express the meaning of the source text.The translator tries to find the optimal relevance between the source text and the context,so that the target readers could get the maximum contextual effect with the minimum processing effort.Relevance theory holds that the aim of human cognitive activity is to gain the maximum contextual effect with the minimum effort,but the truth is that people often need to make efforts to understand the speaker’s intention in language communication.In order to achieve the maximum contextual effect for the target language readers,the translator should,on the basis of a full understanding of the original text,deduce the real meaning that the author of the source text wants to express and convey the explicit information of the original text to the target language readers.The purpose of this report is to analyze the difficulties and problems that the translator meets in the process of translation,and then to propose solutions.The translator believes that relevance theory has a important significance in guiding the dialogue translation.Under the guidance of relevance theory,this report explores effective strategies and methods for fiction translation,especially for the dialogue translation of detective novels.In a word,this translation practice is not only a test for the translator,but also a promotion for the translator. |
