A Report On Chinese Translation Of Peking And The Pekingese During The First Year Of The British Embassy At Peking (Chapters Three To Four)

The completion of this report is based on the Peking and the Pekingese during the First Year of the British Embassy at Peking.The book was written by an English doctor Rennie who held the post of the Second Counselor of British Embassy during 1865 to 1866.He wrote down what he saw and heard in China in his diary.Based on the translation of the source text,the author of the current report finished this report.According to the translation task,the author of the current report is responsible for the translation of Chapter Three and Chapter Four.There are about 15 thousand words altogether in these two chapter.Chapter Three describes all that Rennie saw and heard from April 1 to 20,including the arrangements of Leang-koong-foo,the meeting with prince,military drill,blackmail event of Embassy and so on.Chapter Four describes what happened during April 21 to 30,including the visit to Russia cemetery,the solution to the problem of wounded soldiers,decapitating event,and details connected with the "Eight Great Temples" on the hills,etc.In general,these two chapters mainly mirrors the political background,social life and geographical environment in Peking in the late Qing Dynasty.The report is guided by Eco-translatology.It was put forward by Hu Gengshen,a professor from Tsinghua University.Its core is Translation as Adaptation and Selection.The translation principles are mutildimensional adaptation and adaptive selection and the translation methods are Three-Dimensional Transformation.Under the guidance of the theory,the translator gives detailed analysis to the translation of words,sentences and culture in the source text from the perspectives of language,culture and communication.In this report,Eco-translatology is applied to the translation of travel note,which is a meaningful attempt.In the translation practice,through the comparison between nature ecology and translation ecology,translator combines adaptation and selection principles with the translation words,sentences and passages and reproduces the ecological environment of the source text in the target text.The aim of the report is the exploration of translation principles and methods of travel notes.It hopes that the report will offer some help to scholars who are going to study the translation of travel note.
